Our Challenge is to commercialize and disseminate the tiles that use the backside of defected tiles as a front surface.

Long description

We found out in research of building material waste that most of defected tiles go to landfill. Compared to other industrial products, the defect rate of tiles and ceramics is relatively high, and the amount can be reached to several tons per day on a day The most of rejection reasons are due to uneven or blur color of glaze that does not relate to its functionality. In response to the question of “how can we benefit society with these usable defective products that are discarded?”, we focused on the back of tiles, which becomes unseen after tiling. We were fascinated by the color and expression of the material of the soil itself, and the industrial beauty of the back foot shape at the back. We also thought that by using the back side, we could create a place of resurrection for tiles discarded. Currently, we are testing a method of purchasing defective tiles from the manufacturer and pasting them on the mesh to commercialize before the defective products go to the disposal site. We try to utilize the existing tile manufacturing ecosystem and commercial distribution as much so that both tile makers and people who choose tiles can directly share their awareness of issues. In the future, we believe that it is possible to apply the concept to the problem of tile industry and other material and products in various countries.
