Regenerative mezcal can reverse climate change, create revenue for farmers, improve livestock health and reinvigorate our biocultural heritage.

Long description

Casa Agave is a circular, commercially viable, zero-waste business model that uses agave to jumpstart ecosystem restoration, improve livestock health and produce the world’s first carbon-negative mezcal. All while restoring dignity, prosperity and life to the traditional communities of Guanajuato. To achieve this we have created and implemented an innovative reforestation system called Agavesse, capable of reversing desertification, while requiring extremely low maintenance and no irrigation.

First, in a successional system agave can serve as a starter for ecosystem, soil, and aquifer restoration, when planted in the right way; second, agave leaves (pencas) can be repurposed in several ways to make a low-cost fermented animal feed and methane-reducing feed supplement, which in turn has the potential to change the livestock industry in significant ways; and third, the agave hearts (piñas) are used to create the world’s first regenerative mezcal that would be carbon-negative, zero-waste, and which additionally will renovate the long standing mezcal traditions in Guanajuato.

Regenerative mezcal is an approach that we expect to become the benchmark when producing other agave spirits such as tequila, bacanora, raicilla, etc. Agaves are desert succulents that have long been central to Mexican culture, used by indigenous people for hundreds of years for sustenance, fibers for clothing, tools, fences, housing, and more. Today, as the base of some of Mexico’s most visible exports, agave has the opportunity to create and bring back a brighter and more abundant future for the communities that have long preserved
