Upcycling textile waste into pride flag rugs to promote LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy in a sustainable way.

Long description

This project will upcycle textile waste into rag rugs intended for sale which portray various pride flags made by LGBTQIA+ youth. This project will marry sustainability with LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy and will build on our initial Change Clothes Crumlin project “Swap, Stitch and Socialise” which promoted circular economy and sustainability in the Dublin area. An issue we encountered with our initial project was the textile waste which we were left with from items which were not swapped or were too damaged to hang on the rails. Our swap shop events will be running more regularly in the future and so we expect this to be a continuing issue. When contemplating ways to tackle this issue we came up with the idea of rag rugs – rugs which can be used as wall hangings or traditional rugs which are made from textile waste. There have been a number of LGBTQIA+ attacks in Dublin recently which have effected us greatly, and as pride flags are so important for promoting LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy we decided that making rag rugs with the designs of various pride flags, made by LGBTQIA+ youth would be a good use of our resources. LGBTQIA+ youth will consulted in the creative process, trained adequately and be given the proceeds of the sales for their work with us.
