Creating a backpack that can be reused/rented by masqueraders (persons who wear Carnival costumes) or masband (costume production company).

Long description

Carnival is an annual celebration, that takes place in over 50+ countries. One unique aspect of the celebration is the costumes that are created. Each year, designers create costumes that feature gemmed bras, panties, leg, and arm pieces. One key accessory of the costume ensemble is the “backpack” which is a decorated object designed to carry on one’s back.

Backpacks are typically adorned with animal feathers, and plastic-based materials and designed with no means of reusing the materials because the feathers, gems, and fabric are hot glued to wireframes and bras to create your costume. Trying to remove these materials thereafter destroys them.

Our goal is to redesign a carnival backpack that can be reused and rented from one carnival to another by either the masquerader (person who wears the costume) or by the mas band (costume production company). The backpack will feature modular aspects, and be created in a way that preserves the raw material so they are easier to be reused. This project will be embedded in our larger costume recycling process that we started four years ago!
