Using discarded fishing nets to make long lasting products while avoiding pollution to the environment.

Long description

This project reuses old polyamide fishing nets, discarded by the fishing industry that would end up polluting ocean waters. We are talking about an extremely polluting material, with around 80% of marine plastic pollution being fishing nets and equipment from this activity (www.theoceancleanup.com). This material is responsible for the loss of about 100 million animals per year. We basically manufacture sponges for washing bathrooms, cleaning dishes, bags that replace the use of plastic bags and ecobags for transporting groceries. These sponges can be used for approximately 6 to 8 years, unlike regular sponges, which have to be replaced about twice a month. We are also avoiding throwing away conventional sponges that pollute the environment. Bags and ecobags can last forever. We also produce rugs and baskets on a smaller scale and we know that with fishing nets supported by good design, they can be transformed into many objects, thus avoiding the removal of natural resources from the planet. Approximately 20% of the profit from the sale of these products is invested in the planting of native trees in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. All the little leftovers are used to produce great pieces of art in order to draw attention to this giant invisible pollution, thus preventing this waste from going back into the ocean. The idea is that one day the project will be so aligned and these sponges will return to the production line to also be part of the art pieces.
