Turn hard-to-sell B-grade hangers into "one animal" that is your favorite.

Long description

More and more elementary schools across Japan are giving wooden hangers to students as graduation gifts, as they can be “used daily for a long time” and “their fan shape is a good omen”. However, the high quality which these commemorative items demand makes them difficult to sell, especially if they have minor scratches or uneven paintwork. In 2022, more than 20% of the approximately 29,000 units/year produced by a single manufacturer will be sold through alternative sales channels as B-grade products, leading to a scenario where warehouses get overstretched and products are eventually disposed. Which is not good for the production cycle or for the environment. This is why we launched this project, to open up new possibilities for B grade hangers. As our first step, we launched “CLOSET ANIMAL,” a project to turn B-grade hangers into animal sculptures. The wooden pieces cut from hangers are made into a craft kit, which sold and then assembled by the user into the shape of an “animal”. By offering a creative experience, we not only raise awareness of the underlying and environmental issues involved in this initiative, but also ensure that the artwork completed by their family or themselves will remain with them as a favorite “one of a kind” item for the rest of their lives. Our ultimate goal is to upcycle and redistribute all B grade hangers that are no longer available for sale, thereby reducing waste to zero.
