Espadín agave fiber products made by Oaxacan communities. We take advantage of the leftover leaves from the mezcal industry.

Long description

Hermano Maguey is a community development project focused on promoting the financial, social, and cultural inclusion of indigenous Oaxacan families in sustainable maguey harvest systems and the use of its bioproducts. Our practices encourage a circular economy, and centre on respect for the rights of native peoples, their customs, and traditions.

In 2019, Hermano Maguey, in collaboration with the artist Trinee Ellitsgaard, started a fiber extraction project to take advantage of the waste agave leaves from the mezcal industry. A decorticator machine was acquired in Yucatán, where the extraction of fiber is industry and tradition.

The machine is now located in the valley of Tlacolula, and with 5 employees, fiber extraction is already a sustainable activity. In 2022 more than 50,000 leaves were recovered to produce more than 1000kg of fiber that were sold to our partner clients who have positioned the fiber as a desirable material for the design & art industry.

On February 2022, in the pursuit of cultural heritage conservation, Hermano Maguey started FIBRA, a project with the commitment to bring the fiber closer to artisan communities native to the state of Oaxaca. For the last year, we have created a variety of products in collaboration with 25 artisans from 8 communities and developed a network of 5 commercial partners to make our efforts sustainable.
