Footprintbuddies

Footprintbuddies is a conceptual idea in which people (buddies) can compensate each other’s footprint: People with a small footprint can sell a ‘piece of their footprint’ to someone who likes to live on a larger foot. This way people can earn money by being sustainable.

 

Climate crisis

‘We’ have to cut down our impact if we want to give people and earth a future. However, not everyone has an equal share in this climate crisis.

 

Relationship between ´money´ and ´footprint´

There are several studies that show that wealth and a large footprint often go hand in hand. For example, the richest 10% would be responsible for 50% of all greenhouse gasses over the past 25 years. While the poorest 50% of the world’s population emitted 7% (Oxfam).

 

Fairer system

Footprintbuddies is a speculative idea that not only focuses on the climate-crisis, but also on the inequality-crisis. In addition, it emphasizes the sense of connection with each other.

 

Mission

With the Footprintbuddies project I want to investigate whether the climate-crisis and the inequality-crisis can be connected and influence each other in a positive way. So that the global shares become more equal, empathy can develop, and the pressure on the climate can decrease. I would like to start by gathering a team to work towards a presentation at the Dutch Design Week 2023.
