FRAME is a circular easy to assemble, modular sideboard made from recycled aluminum and honeycomb-cardboard.
Long description
Only about 10% of furniture in Europe is recycled. The increasing use of laminated chipboard consisting of toxic adhesive and synthetic resin is one reason for it. This material makes it difficult to recycle old furniture, leading to a significant amount of waste. In Germany, e.g., 800,000 tons of waste wood from the furniture industry are sent to incinerators each year – that is more than twice the amount of single use packaging waste (~350.000 tons) in Germany alone every year. Especially big and bulky storage furniture often ends on landfills. We need to rethink how to design and produce storage furniture made from laminated chipboards. For example, a closet or a sideboard for books doesn’t need to be water protected.
FRAME is a modular sideboard made from recycled aluminum that supports sturdy cardboard honeycomb boards as an alternative to laminated chipboards. The frame made of recycled aluminum provides stability, durability and is easy to assemble and disassemble. The honeycomb-cardboard is 100% recyclable, lightweight, and simply plugged into the frame. By using a robust and long-lasting frame and cardboard components, FRAME reduces the use of the non-circular material laminated chipboard – while allowing individualization, e.g., extendibility in length.
FRAME not only reduces the amount of wood needed for storage furniture. It is made to last and to be disassembled, all parts can be replaced, it saves transportation energy and costs, and all material are recycled and recyclable. With FRAME everything stays in the cycle and nothing has to be burned.
