Hand-loomed hemp recovery initiative to disrupt conventional fashion production

Long description

Hereco stands for Hemp, Recovery, and Community. Our mission is to disrupt conventional fashion production- making it circular, meaningful, unique and valuable. We rescue stocks of hand-loomed hemp and gather a community of Ukrainian seamstresses to produce Folklore-inspired shirts – Vyshyvankas.

Hemp is one of the most sustainable and underestimated fibres existing today as it requires almost no water or fertilizers. As a fabric, hemp is durable, biodegradable and resistant.

Ukrainian people have been growing hemp for thousands of years and it was the primary textile material for everyday wear. Today, old stocks of hand-loomed hemp are being collected around the country, some rolls are estimated to be over a hundred years old. We want to acquire this material to create a community-ran seamstress collective.

Devastated by war Ukraine is facing some of the worst economic crises. Since many men are at war women now become providers of the family, however, frequently cannot commit to a full-time job. It is common for Ukrainian women to be skilful seamstresses. We want to use our precious hemp material to establish a community of seamstresses and to create our final product- vyshyvanka. With Hereco, we want to tell a personal story of circularity, hemp, craftsmanship, war and womanhood. Through our project, we re-create an emotional connection between the product, the maker and the client.
