An innovative initiative to research and prototype a first regenerative community in Liechtenstein.

Long description

In the microstate Liechtenstein, urban sprawl and housing affordability are central challenges. It is vital to rethink the spatial configurations of our current mode of living whilst focusing on resource-saving, climate-positive models.

Our vision is to develop a self-sufficient lighthouse community that functions as a site to demonstrate circularity in context of the home. The development of such a prototype in Liechtenstein is a gradual process. We are now entering Phase 2 which is what our application focuses on.

Rather than introducing pre-existing blueprints of what a regenerative community could be (in context of Liechtenstein), we developed a participatory framework to co-design a first prototype with the local population. To that end, we are launching an awareness campaign that runs through the whole of 2023. The campaign aims to highlight the urgency of adapting our lifestyles, to raise curiosity and educate about regenerative living whilst bringing all the relevant stakeholders together. We are initiating lectures, local debates, and workshops to concretize solutions. We conduct representative surveys to better understand the needs such a prototype should meet whilst a second research studio in collaboration with the University of Liechtenstein and a working group co-hosted by the municipality of Vaduz and our association aims to work out concrete changes to building policies to tackle the formal constraints of realizing new building models in Liechtenstein.

The goal is to define action points on how a regenerative living model can be integrated into the socio-ecological landscape of Liechtenstein in phase 3.
