Rescue of linen culture in the rural region of the city of Porto Alegre through principles of inclusive circular economy.

Long description

The Land Fabric project aims to rescue the linen culture through the planting of flaxseed in the rural region of the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Brazil, using principles of inclusive circular economy. A second objective is the inclusion of women from the city’s urban perimeter as weavers of the raw material produced. Of systemic nature, this project addresses environmental, social, and economic challenges simoultaneously. The city of Porto Alegre has a rural agroecological belt that faces the challenge of evasion of the sons and daughters of rural producers who do not see future in staying in the region. The project aims to show the possibility of doing more than just “selling lettuce”; The idea is to show these future owners that it is worth to keep producing in their land in a sustainable way. Flaxseed production generates not only linen, but also other important raw materials, such as oil, for example, in a sustainable and agroecological way; And there is also the rescue of a culture, where women will recover affections from times when they saw their grandmothers produce, through the collaboration with women weavers of the Morro da Cruz neighbourhood in the urban center of the city. The project is in the very initial phase of the flaxseed production tests. At the moment, we seek acceleration to move to the next phase of the project, buying machines to process the raw materials.
