Biomaterials fully made from Mexico City's local agriculture waste.

Long description

Palli is a fully local based project from Mexico City, specifically born in Milpa Alta, Mexico’s City green shield. While being the 2nd biggest “county”/alcaldía in the city, Milpa Alta plays a crucial role as in history for the city but also as a physical helper due to it being the least populated part of the city, and also the one with the most “green” space, while having approx. 280km2 of territory surface, 130km2 are forest and agricultural areas.

Milpa Alta is one of the greatest producers of Nopal (Cactus) in Mexico.  Producing and distributing 150 tons daily, where 10% is considered waste translating in 15 daily tons on Nopal waste.

Added to this Nopal acts as a principal actor in the project due to its physical properties (similarities with wood, water repel, cactus slime) but also due to its meaning in Mexican Gastronomy and mainly Mexican identity since Prehispanic time.

With this in mind Palli seeks to develop biomaterials mainly with this Nopal waste, creating a range of alternative viable materials with different components and physical properties. But always working with natural waste and people from Milpa Alta, no external add-ons neither non natural components, only what we can found naturally in the locality.

Create a fully circular bomaterial that becomes viable in material, economical and natural way.

Designer as a medium, nature as the director that provides the process, form and possibilities.

Wok from, with and for nature.
