Recycling and reusing of household waste to promote zero landfill in Chattagram City, Bangladesh.

Long description

Project Goal: To promote zero Landfill in Chattogram City, Bangladesh by recycling household waste with mobile-based drum composter (MDC). Project Objectives:

  1. To reduce the burden of 25 MT of household-based organic waste and 75 MT of other waste in Chattogram City, Bangladesh [Other waste is plastic, paper, cloths, glass, metals etc.]
  2. To motivate city corporations on using MDC and waste recycling for waste management in Chattogram city.

Note: According to the analysis of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), the ratio of domestic household waste is 1:3 (organic waste Vs. Other waste). The ratio is reflected in the above-mentioned objective 1 and objective 2.

Chattogram City, Port City of Bangladesh, consists of 41 wards and the area is approximately 155.4 Sq Km. Currently, there are about 5.2 M population (metro area) are living in this city (www.macrotrends.net). In an average 3000 tons of solid waste is generated daily in Chattogram City. The City Corporation can collect 75% of waste (Waste Report, 2019-2020). It means there is a huge gap between waste generation and collection. Such inadequate and uncontrolled waste management has an impact on the urban environment such as waterlogging is caused by light rain. The amount of waste in CCC is increasing day by day due to the increased number of infrastructure developments, shopping complexes, restaurants, markets, bazaars along with roadside tea stalls, floating vendors, and flower markets on the footpath.
