UPCYCLING single-use waste plastic to Conserve the environment, Enable Rural Livelihoods and Create Conscious Citizens

Long description

reCharkha EcoSocial is a Social Enterprise, an initiative of UPCYCLING single-use and non-recyclable waste plastic bags/polybags and multi-layered wrappers, into handwoven fabric, using the Indian traditional CHARKHA (Spindle) and HANDLOOM. The process of weaving is entirely manual, thus enabling Livelihoods for our Tribal and Rural Women and Artisans. The UPCYCLED-HANDWOVEN fabric is then used to make products such as handbags, fashion accessories, office utilities and home decor products, for the Conscious Consumer. The original colors of this waste plastic is retained. No new dyes and pigments are used.

For the purpose of enabling EcoSocial Livelihoods, our project is located in 3 units.

  1. A tribal village in Dadra Nagar Haveli, India , based near the western coast of India.
  2. A village in Bare, Pune, Maharashtra
  3. An urban unit in Pune, Maharashtra India. Our current production work employs 32 tribal women and 8 urban artisans fulltime; thus supporting 40 underprivileged families, directly. We plan to launch more such decentralized units in other locations too!
In addition to upcycling waste plastic bags, we take the extra effort to use other types of waste such as yarns made of PET bottles, waste flex banners (PVC), bubble wraps, waste foam and textile waste, as add-ons for our products such as belts, inner lining, padding and so on.
