Improve agriculture production by independent farming, training farmers, and reducing spoilage through agri-processing and distribution.
Long description
In Sierra Leone, 85% of 72,000 km2 is arable, yet food insecurity is widespread, with 65% living on $2 per day and over 60% unemployed. Food insecurity is caused by low farm production and yields due to climate- change, poor farming techniques, and high crop spoilage due to inadequate community infrastructure. Therefore, importing 70% of food resulted in increased food costs and insecurity, ranking 181 out of 189 countries in the 2019 Human Development Index. Hence, agricultural development is essential to a country’s development as it impacts human development and the economy. According to World Bank, agriculture is the most powerful tool for ending extreme poverty, boosting shared prosperity, and feeding 9.7 billion people by 2050. Moreover, four times more effective in raising incomes among the poorest than in other sectors because it accounts for 4% of GDP and 25% in developing countries. Hence, we hypothesize that if everyone from farmers to SGGIMA and customers is involved in the change, we, directly and indirectly, foster sustainable change. Therefore, the slogan of SGGIMA embodies its philosophy: “Where Care Meets Sustainability.” Hence, SGGIMA’s vision is agricultural development that improves food security and social welfare through independent-farming and training farmers for free, who will serve as mentors to four others as a requirement. Further, SGGIMA will buy easily spoiled farm products from farmers to increase cash flow and maximize raw materials through agri-processing. Next, SGGIMA will re-invest profits from independent-farming and agri-processing into social infrastructures that improve life.
