Biodegradable and compostable packaging made from a single material: dried palm leaves.

Long description

Solo is a packaging made from a single material: dried palm leaves. The packaging does not require resins, glues, or any other chemicals, making it naturally biodegradable and compostable. Additionally, it is microwave, oven, and freezer-resistant.

The leaves are composed of natural fibers (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin), which are proven to have excellent properties for use in packaging, such as retaining heat. Furthermore, no palms are ever cut or damaged to obtain the raw material. Only dried leaves are ideal for production, so we must wait until they fall naturally. They fall during the whole year and each one can make two containers on average.

Combining botany and design, Solo maintains the convenience of a disposable packaging whilst making no harm to nature. This material has similar or even better characteristics compared to polymers, keeping the food temperature, not absorbing liquid in a short period of time, and having no smell or taste.

We’ve developed two packaging alternatives: a rectangular and a round one. The first has a closure system between the base and the lid. The lid also has a slope to pile other packages, making the delivery safer. The second consists of two identical parts that fit together from the tabs. In addition, trays, plates, and spoons have been also developed.
