NjordFrey provide high-yield aquaponic starter kits to allow smallholder farmers
Long description
NjordFrey provide smallholder farmers with high-yield aquaponic solutions (3000% more fish and 700% more crops) that provide significant economic growth while being sustainable (using 95% less water). Aquaponics is a proven technology of growing fish/crops in a closed loop, water circulated system that filters and breakdown the fish effluent/waste, into nutrients that are absorbed by the crops, increasing growth, which allows for clean water to be returned back to the fish, allowing for increased stocking density.
Our project looks to design and build a low cost aquaponic starter kit that is accessible to smallholder farmers; using local materials and tools. We partner with groups of 40 farmers to then help operate this aquaponic starter kit, supporting them with training, inputs and importantly we give them access to our digital monitoring system that runs 24/7 with the goal to provide simple feedback that will maximise production at all times.
Our project looks to work out all of the design and operational features required to make the kit modular, low cost and environmentally friendly. This includes building the kit (fish tank, crop growbeds, pipes, pumping and filtering system) to have zero carbon footprint. Farmers will gain a 10x increase in income, an increase from the average 1950kcal a day to above 2500kcal recommended amount and female empowerment (70% of farmers are female) from using this high yield, circular production and environmentally friendly form (no fertiliser/soil/rainfall) of farming.
