Building safe, interactive, sustainable playscapes for children from underprivileged communities to enable their holistic development.
Long description
Article 31 of the UN’s convention on the rights of the child states play as the right of every child. The hours spent on a playground swing develops one’s spatial understanding, vestibular balance and fine motor skills. If a single swing can be so vital to a child’s development, we can only imagine the endless benefits that a diverse playscape brings with it. Unfortunately, the reality in a country as diverse as India is very grim. The unavailability of structured play areas in schools across India is a major problem that we have identified affecting the overall development of children. At Anthill Creations, we aim to bring back play by transforming spaces into interactive and sustainable playgrounds with locally sourced materials to create quicker and cheaper solutions. We upcycle scrap materials like tyres, oil drums, recycled plastic boards to build these sustainable playgrounds. Our playscapes are completely DIY and can be built in just about seven days.
Anthill playscapes have been directly attributed for greater classroom performance, improved attendance rates and reduced violent behaviour, in testimonies given by stakeholders involved in our projects. The environmental impact of our work goes hand in hand with this social impact.
We’re also driven by the desire to innovate – ‘Playground on Wheels’ is our ambitious project, at the ideation stage, where a truck is converted into a playground that travels to different communities and serves as a pop-up playground.
