Long description
Suubi Flood-Resilient Homes project is a unique and innovative housing solution for communities frequently affected by floods in East Africa. Suubi is a word derived from the local dialect, which means hope. The Project model concept focuses on providing a safe and secure environment for families during and after a flood. Creating a building that stands safe at all varying flood levels through the buoyant foundation technology involves creating sufficient airspace below the building, in this case, plastic drum barrels.
The structure houses a small porch leading to an open floor plan and a store/kitchen. The building interior is well-lit with natural light through two windows on opposite ends of the door hence cross ventilation. Sandwiched walls are incorporated in the design, i.e. interior side is finished with semi-circular bamboo slates that give the room a warm natural feel, and the outside is clad with corrugated coloured iron sheets. The floor is finished with T&G timber joists. We propose using mat ceilings to celebrate the craft of the native people of the area and also give the dwelling a sense of place. The total construction cost estimate is relatively $4000 per dwelling.
The Suubi Flood-Resilient House project is a solution for communities affected by floods and a model for sustainable and eco-friendly housing. The house is designed to be affordable, durable and easy to maintain, making it a practical solution for families needing a safe and secure home.
