“” is a tapestry collection that used natural avocado pigments, obtained from avocado pits and skin that would otherwise be considered waste

Long description

This collection is part of an exploration process, that seeks to expand upon dyeing practices in Teotilán del Valle, an indigenous weaving community in Oaxaca, Mexico. By implementing newly developed avocado pigments to dye fine tapestries.
We are a textile experimentation lab where innovation, quality and social responsibility have worked as paths to explore the universe of fabrics. Through our 10-year run, we’ve specialized on the use of natural pigments, such as indigo and cochineal, thanks to the dyeing traditions of our artisan collaborators but as our environmental concerns have evolved, we saw the opportunity to create a better alternative to our production process.
Mexico supplies 45% of the international avocado market, and it’s one of the most consumed fruits in the country. Although restaurants take great advantage of the fruit itself, there’s still a considerable waste of pits and skin left.
even though the textile industry was built upon the use of natural pigments, avocado dye is a fairly new concept, the pink hues it creates are both beautiful and unpredictable. In the past year, we’ve experimented with our dyeing experts from Teotilán to create a color pallet with different avocado-based formulas, the result is a tapestry collection achieved entirely with wool and avocado, and woven by Zapotec experts.
This new collection is possible thanks to an alliance with “Los danzantes”, a restaurant in downtown Oaxaca, just 30 minutes away from Teotilán, who has agreed to donate all their avocado waste to create this circular system.
