Long description
The Alchemy of Becoming is a project that puts the material as the protagonist, to question the inert role that we have given to our objects and start a conversation about the material language of the modern world, where consumer trends have accelerated, and physical permanence is increasingly fleeting.
This project creates a visual alphabet based on the decay and evolution of materials, exploring the terror and repulsion caused by the inevitable effect of time on things as a society. This exploration proposes a way of creating where decay is a crucial part of the product’s design, not only as a solution to the waste it might make but as a tool to reintroduce the user to the natural and biological cycles through its aesthetic.
The alphabet is a graph that helps us categorize and describe how decay evolves through the deterioration of materials; it also considers where and who interacted with it. It requires samples from different materials and includes more conceptual things, such as sampling from a social gathering, being in the park, or eating in a group. Each sample uses the alphabet to create a word and can elaborate complex phrases when describing bound or composed materials and their use context.
The alphabet might offer a way to generate a palpable awareness of our context and the impact that we actively have on our environment.
