Voronoi Runners are 100% biodegradable sneakers implementing 3D printing technologies and material development constructed without the use of adhesive
Long description
The Voronoi Runners are sneakers made using only 100% biodegradable materials, constructed without the use of any adhesives. Proposing a solution to the large amounts of waste impacting the environment from the footwear industry. Biodegradable alternatives accommodate proactive waste management targeting the source of the issue as opposed to dealing with materials after production.
Two major factors complicating the end-of-life management of footwear is material choice and joining agents. Currently materials focus on performance using harsh chemicals while strong adhesives prevent the separation and treatment of these materials disregarding the end-of-life waste management. This suggests the design for a sneaker using only biodegradable materials with no adhesives without compromising performance to lead the future of sustainable footwear.
The Voronoi runners are made from 7 different materials and 10 different parts. All are fully compostable and break down within 1 year. Materials include; biodegradable 3D print filament, merino wool, linen, organic cotton, linen twine, plant fiber, and my own newly created bio-foam. The construction of the Voronoi Runner considers end-of-life waste management by allowing for the manageable separation of each different material for individual composting met with optimal degradation variables.
This project follows the athleisure movement, where comfortable supportive shoes can be worn through all activities in day-to-day life. Reducing the need for a range of specialized footwear and offering a 1 for all design.
