a public funded watering service for street trees in dry season serviced by volunteers

Long description

The increasing mortality of trees due to, elevated temperatures, prolonged droughts and heavy but less frequent rainfall has become a concern in many parts of the world, particularly in urban areas with sealed surfaces such as Berlin. To address this, rainwater management and preserving green spaces are essential to make cities livable.Berlin faces specific challenges as extreme rainfall events often lead to overflows in the sewage system and the discharge of wastewater into fresh water sources. Despite attempts by the green space offices and citizen-led initiatives to provide water for 25,000 trees out of the 258,000 in need, access to water remains a challenge. This tree watering service aims to address this challenge, supporting the well-being of street trees and contributing to a greener and more livable city.I propose a public-funded tree watering service executed by volunteers to address the challenge of access to water for Berlin’s street trees. From March to October, trees would receive 100 liters of water per week. Water tanks, made of galvanized steel with a capacity of 1500 liters, would be installed and connected to existing rain downpipes on the exterior walls of buildings, providing water for up to three trees for three weeks during dry periods. Each tank would come with a closet for a hose and a hawk for soil loosening before watering.
