The Whole Earth project is a community-driven library for solutions to humanitarian and environmental crises as a common good.
Long description
The Whole Earth project is a community-driven digital library that serves as a resource for solutions to humanitarian and environmental crises, drawing inspiration from the independent production of personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact. It works as a unique emergency response platform that facilitates a dialogue between designers, makers, and people working on the ground; the project offers an alternative for finding solutions based on the principle of Think Global, Make Local. The project utilizes a decentralized production system with globally shared ideas, utilizing open-source concepts and Creative Commons licences to allow for the free distribution and independent production of designs on-demand. With access to freely available knowledge and blueprints, local production of crisis solutions can occur regardless of location. The project aims to provide short-term, medium-term, and long-term support in crisis situations, leveraging existing networks both locally and globally. Proven solutions are stored in a database as a global public good, allowing for the platform to quickly respond to crises and build upon existing ideas over time. Utilizing digital fabrication and makerspaces, the project aims to create a global network of like-minded individuals through an open source community approach, ultimately leading to a new way of thinking and acting – from crises to urgent needs to answers to the problems of our everyday lives. Change is brought about through the collective efforts of diverse individuals.
